Mahomes leads the charge as underdog Chiefs secure second Lombardi Trophy in four years
A late charge from the Kansas City Chiefs sees the Vince Lombardi trophy return to Missouri
The Kansas City Chiefs charged into Super Bowl LVII like wild stallions, but they found themselves in an unusual position - playing as the underdogs. At halftime, with a ten-point deficit to the Philadelphia Eagles and a visibly limping quarterback, the Chiefs seemed destined for another Super Bowl disappointment.
But the second half was a different story. The Chiefs scored on every possession, with Patrick Mahomes leading the way in what was possibly his best half ever in a Super Bowl. He snagged his second Super Bowl MVP award, and with the Chiefs securing their second Lombardi Trophy in four years, they sent a clear message to the NFL - they have an all-time great quarterback in Mahomes, the best in the league.
When the confetti began to fall, Mahomes applauded his teammates for stepping up in the second half while chatting with Erin Andrews of Fox Sports. The offense was flawless, and the defensive front took control of the line of scrimmage, allowing the Chiefs to beat down the Eagles.
Sure, the offensive line was fantastic, and the game plan in the second half was on point, but what can we say? Mahomes was a wizard on the field. Despite aggravating his sprained ankle just before halftime, he stood on his head and led the Chiefs to a resounding victory.
By the game's end, Mahomes had completed 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, adding another 44 yards on the ground. For him, those were pedestrian numbers, but he still managed to clinch the game's MVP award, putting him in some rarefied air.
At 27 years old, Mahomes is already a living legend. He's won two MVP awards, played in three Super Bowls, and won two of them, all in just five seasons as the Chiefs' starter.
Of course, staying on top of the mountain isn't easy, but Mahomes and the Chiefs are aware of that. After snatching the Super Bowl LIV win from the San Francisco 49ers, they went on to take a beating from Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Super Bowl LV.
Still, Arrowhead has hosted the last five AFC Championship Games, adding another feather in Mahomes' cap. Changes will come during the offseason, but the Chiefs have an unstoppable quarterback who is a tsunami on the field.
Dynasty, anyone? The Chiefs have already won three AFC championships and two Super Bowls in just four years, which is quite impressive in an era of free agency and roster turnover. So love them or hate them, get used to seeing Mahomes and his crew in action. They are the team to beat!
